Reports have come in from all over

North America

Just a few years ago, actor Rob Lowe and his sons had a terrifying encounter while camping in the Ozark Mountains, during which they reportedly feared for their lives. Scientists and researchers are working hard to investigate and verify these reports, interviewing eyewitnesses and examining the evidence. Explore some of the evidence we’ve gathered during field research expeditions in various remote locations across America, and see what conclusions you draw.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania ranks 3rd highest in the nation for reported Bigfoot sightings, after only Washington and California. What makes Pennsylvania a great habitat for Bigfoot? Pennsylvania is a large state with vast dense forests, including natural caves and numerous abandoned coal mines, perfect for staying out of sight. One of our best photos is of a massive footprint found in the Allegheny Mountains, in the same area where a large suspected kill zone was found. Piles of animal bones, mostly deer, indicate a large predator was feeding there.

The Pine Barrens of New Jersey are a unique and exciting research location, because the area boasts sightings of not one, but two, cryptids. Each year, sightings of the New Jersey Devil, as well as numerous Bigfoot sightings, are reported in the Pine Barrens. Mike Familant, a well known Bigfoot researcher, has found various types of evidence in New Jersey. He believes the creatures are nomadic, stripping a habitat of preferred vegetation before moving on to greener pastures, eventually returning in a sort of cyclical migration pattern.

One of my most thrilling expeditions was in Salt Fork State Park in southeastern Ohio. While sleeping in my SUV during a campout, I awoke to see a tall, dark figure looming directly behind my vehicle. From my position I could only see the torso and shoulders of the creature because it was so close, and was obviously very tall. Another researcher in a tent nearby heard something moving outside and was able to see the creature on a thermal imaging camera. In the morning, a massive, muddy handprint was clearly visible on the back of my SUV.

Northwestern South Carolina is home to an annual Bigfoot festival at which I had the privilege of speaking. The organizers of the event provided lodging for the keynote speakers in a lovely mountain cabin. Unbeknownst to any of the speakers, the area is a hotspot for Bigfoot sightings. During my stay I heard blood curdling screams, reminiscent of a woman being murdered, accompanied by dogs frantically barking. Two of the other speakers actually saw a creature in the nearby woods. On the last morning of our stay, we discovered that a previously bare outdoor table was piled with pinecones that none of us had placed there. A gift, perhaps?

I recently had the opportunity to spend 9 days in Georgia with fellow researcher Mike Familant, interviewing Bigfoot eyewitnesses from the state. While there I met Sheila and Scott Granger, police officers who had a frightening encounter with Bigfoot. They took us to the exact location of the sighting, sharing their experience with us. They’ve since started a Bigfoot hunting business, where guests can spend time in the woods fly fishing and hunting for evidence. They’ve also shared their experience on an episode of the podcast “In the Shadow of the Big Red Eye.”
